To my Millennial crowd, Friday is right around the corner, and all your friends' Snapchat stories have been giving you some serious FOMO. You spent your last dime on avocado toast, what the hell are you going to do for fun this weekend?
Here are 5 simple ways to have fun on the weekends (WITHOUT going broke): 1. Stop going to the bar to buy drinks. The average price of a mixed drink at any given bar ranges from $3-$8. The average price of a bottle of vodka is around $15. Think about it - you're paying about $15 for three mixed drinks or beers when you could've bought a bottle or a twelve pack for the same price. Get some friends together and have some drinks at home - you will save a lot of money, and probably have just as much fun. 2. Go to the grocery store instead of Applebee's. Yeah, I know how appealing the 2 for $20 is... but you know you ALWAYS end up adding an ice cream sundae and a tall beer. Before you know it, the tab is over $40, just for one night's meal! Go to the grocery store on Friday night and buy yourself some delicious grub to make at home. You'd be surprised how much money you can save if you decide to skip restaurants and start cooking your own food. If you need to get out the house, have a picnic! Eat dinner at a local park or somewhere different than your normal setting. 3. If you must go... Use coupons at your favorite restaurants. So you've decided that staying at home is simply not an option since Old Chicago just emailed you a $10-off coupon. Not bad! Next time you're out to eat, make sure you sign up whatever promotion they offer! A simple way to save money while going out to eat is by taking advantage of their rewards programs or email coupons. 4. Be active! You don’t need a fancy gym membership - you can be active even if you’re in between paychecks. Exercising releases happy-feel-good hormones, and being outside and getting fresh air is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Exercise isn’t restricted to running on a treadmill, either. If you have a bike, go for a ride! If you have a dog, take her/him for a walk. Check out your local community’s website to see if there are classes or sports you can play recreationally. Go for a hike up a trail in the woods. Go camping at the state park! Believe it or not, it can be a lot of fun to workout with your friends, even if it’s as simple as walking around the block. Don’t be a couch potato this weekend - get active. No person ever regrets a completed workout! 5. Get lost in a good book. Not a beauty magazine, not a blog post you scroll through on your phone. (Like this one!) Turn off Netflix, put your phone on the coffee table. I’m talking about a real book. Go to your local library, thrift store, or bookstore to pick out your next novel. There are many online book clubs available and websites that can help you find your next favorite book! (FYI - GoodReads is my favorite, it helps you pick out books based on your preferences). We all remember and yearn for the adventurous curiosity we felt as children reading our favorite stories. Reading is free, and your brain loves it. There are many ways to have a fun weekend without putting your bank account in the red. Enjoy yourself on your days off - frugally!
