Here we are in mid-August, the leaves are beginning to change, Halloween decor is being displayed in Target already (WHY?!), and sadly, we are encountering the last few weeks of summer. If you're experiencing FOMO from seeing your friends' Snapchat stories of their extravagant vacations, or you're just itching to take a quick summer trip before winter (gasp) makes its return; here are 7 awesome places in the Twin Cities for an affordable, fun, staycation. *Writer's tip: All links are clickable! 1. Radisson Blu at MOA Conveniently located in Bloomington attached to the Mall of America, Radisson Blu is an awesome place to stay overnight or for the weekend. MOA has so much to offer: hundreds of stores to shop at, an abundance of unique restaurants (one of my personal favorite is Rainforest Cafe), arcades, an amusement park, and more. Having a hotel room attached to MOA is a very unique experience; being able to freely explore the mall after it's closed (most bars in the mall remain open until 1-2am) and not having to worry about parking is phenomenal! Also, no matter how old you are, it's always fun to walk through Nickelodeon Universe (or even ride some rides if you're up for it)! *Writer's tip: My husband and I used the app HotelTonight to get a great deal on our hotel room. 2. Duluth Duluth provides some of the most beautiful views our state has to offer! It's about two and a half hours from the Twin Cities and there's a lot to do. If you're feeling extra adventurous, take a bus! Greyhound offers one-way tickets starting at $25 from the Twin Cities to Duluth almost every day. There are many unique things to do in Duluth: like explore a shipwreck from a cliff, visit a haunted mansion, stroll through Canal Park, grab a drink at the iconic Grandma's, and come winter, hit the slopes at Spirit Mountain! *Writer's tip: Priceline Express is the best way to score an affordable hotel room in Duluth. 3. Red Wing Red Wing is a unique city located in Southeastern Minnesota, about an hour and fifteen minutes from the Twin Cities. Red Wing is a perfect staycation for those who enjoy the outdoors, especially hobbies like canoeing, fishing, and boating. You can listen to live music at Levee Park or take a walk down the historic downtown area. There's a lot to do within a 20 minutes of Red Wing, too. In the nearby town of Welch, canoes and kayaks, as well as river tubes (a natural lazy river!) are available for rent at Welch Mill. If you're feeling lucky, make the trip to Treasure Island, which also offers an indoor waterpark, a bowling alley, and a handful of restaurant options. *Writers tip: Ditch the hotel! There are so many affordable and fun campgrounds nearby. 4. Go to a Waterpark! There are several options for waterparks in the great state of Minnesota, both indoor and outdoor. Here are some of the most popular:
5. New Ulm A city filled with historic charm and unique German culture, New Ulm is the perfect getaway for a staycation. Located two hours southwest of the Twin Cities, New Ulm offers lots to do: Tour the Kiesling House, the only wood-framed house remaining in Minnesota from the 1860s; climb the iconic Hermann Monument, also known as "Hermann the German," or grab a drink at the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the United States, Schells Brewery. 6. Breezy Point Resort in Breezy Point Two and a half hours north of the Twin Cities, nestled amongst mature trees and Pelican Lake, you'll find the incredible Breezy Point Resort! At the resort, you'll have plenty of fun things to do: Rent jet skis or a boat at the marina, grab a bite to eat at Dockside, play a round of golf, watch the legendary Elvis show with Chris Olson, or spend some time shopping in nearby towns Nisswa and Pequot Lakes. In the winter, Breezy Point is a great place for snowmobiling, ice fishing, or just relaxing in a jacuzzi! 7. Winona The incredible riverside city of Winona is a two hour drive southeast of the Twin Cities. Visit the Winona Lake Park, visit the historic, beautiful St. Stanislaus church, tour the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, or take the drive up scenic Garvin Heights for an exceptional view of the city and river. enjoy the last few weeks of summer!
