Having Celiac disease, or any form of gluten intolerance, can make going out to eat a stressful experience. It can sometimes feel impossible to find anywhere that offers gluten free food that doesn't taste like cardboard. However, being someone with Celiac myself, I've come up with a list of chain restaurants across the USA that offer gluten free options that are actually quite delicious. Here are some of my favorite chain restaurants for gluten free dishes, in no particular order: *If you do have Celiac or a severe gluten allergy, always be sure to alert the waitstaff so they take extra precautions to ensure there is no cross contamination* 1. BIG BOWLBig Bowl, based out of Illinois, Minnesota, and Virginia, offers a large gluten free menu. My personal favorite dish is the Build-Your-Own-Bowl with gluten free Pad Thai and Shanghai Ginger Garlic. Another delicious meal from Big Bowl is their gluten free Orange Chicken. Big Bowl has one of the largest gluten free menus I've ever seen from a chain restaurant, even offering a delicious chocolate flourless cake! 2. CRAVEOffering a delicious combination of both American and Asian food, Crave, based out out of Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and Maryland has a large gluten free menu including many sushi options. Most locations offer gluten free rice noodles as a substitute for any noodle dish, however, I personally prefer the gluten free Mexican Rolls (Tuna, Escolar, Avocado, Jalapeno) and Edamame. 3. Denny'sDenny's, a popular breakfast option (or middle-of-the-night-in-Vegas option) offers many items gluten free on their regular menu. Just look for the "GF" symbol! Many of their skillets, omelettes, and salads are available gluten free, however I love ordering the "Pick Your Own" breakfast and usually opt for the gluten free English Muffin. It's delicious, and it tastes so much like real English Muffins I've asked before to make sure it was actually GF! 4. APPLEBEE'SWhile Applebee's does not offer an exclusive gluten free menu, many of the items on their regular menu can be modified to be made gluten free. One of their most popular dishes, Fiesta Lime Chicken, is 100% gluten free. It's essentially a chicken breast resting atop corn chips glazed in cheese alongside Mexican rice. Many of their salads are gluten free as long as you request no croutons. You can also order a plain chicken breast or sirloin steak alongside gluten free sides (asparagus, broccoli, peppers, mashed potatoes, and more). 5. Outback STEAKHOUSEOutback Steakhouse offers many items gluten free as well as an extensive GF menu. Salmon, chicken, steaks, salads, and more can all be made gluten free. One of their most popular dessert options, the Chocolate Thunder From Down Under, is also GF and is absolutely delicious. NO GF MENU? ASK TO SPEAK TO THE CHEF.If you're out of town in a Mom-and-Pop restaurant that doesn't offer gluten free menus, ask to speak to the chef or manager. Many times, items that are naturally gluten free (chicken breasts, potatoes, steaks, rice, vegetables, etc) can be made into a custom order that accommodates your needs. As said above, if you have Celiac or a severe gluten allergy, always be sure to inform your server so they can do their best to avoid cross contamination.
